Comic-Con 2012. Geek heaven.

This was definitely a Con for the ages. It started for me on Wednesday when I met 4 of The Obscure Gentlemen, a webcomic group I’ve befriend online. We hung out over Mexican Coke and shared our tales of Webcomicing and joked about for a good couple of hours. Definitely a good group of guys.

I drove down to the actual con on Thursday and spent a good chunk of the day visiting other webcomics artists and purchasing a bunch of books from several webcomics including: Sheldon, Evil Inc, Starslip Crisis, PVP, Penny Arcade, Two Lumps, Shortpacked, reMIND, and Zach Weinersmith’s (from SMBC) new choose your own adventure style book.

I also met up with one of my favorite webcomic artists from Jefbot. Unfortunately his book wasn’t printed on time and he arrived book-less. A fate shared by L.A.W.L.S. A real shame too. I can only imagine the disappointment they must have felt by not having a key piece of merchandise.

Plenty of pictures of floor where also taken (as you’ll see below), however some are out of focus do my taking excited nature I didn’t take the time to focus, or even stop walking. Probably not the best course of action, but when there is so much to see you don’t want to waste time by stopping.

On top of that I got the chance to play the new Transformer: Fall of Cybertron video game, and got my ass handed to me by a bunch of ten year old boys. Much shame was felt.

Friday was more floor time, and two Webcomic Panels. One was The Business of Webcomics, hosted by Brad Guigar, Scott Kurtz, and Robert Khoo. The talk was hilarious, informative, and definitely a must listen to if your in the webcomic game. After that I checked out Dave Kellet’s talk on his upcoming comic strip documentary called Stripped. It’s currently in works, and should hopefully be available for distribution later this year.

I later got to meet Mike and Ryan from Smashing Avatar very briefly in between panels. Mike and I chatted for a few minutes about the con, and webcoming in general.

Afterwards I checked out Riff Trax panel, where they gave us a live ripping of an old safety video, and a trailer to the upcoming live ripping of Manos the Hands of Fate with all new riffs.

That night I was invited to a VIP Nerd Machine party (thanks to a new friend of mine), where I got to test out the demo to the upcoming Tomb Raider video game. I was introduced to the actress who is playing the new Lara Croft, Camilla Luddington, who watched me play the demo, and even jumped a little as I almost got Lara killed.

The next day, Saturday, was Tomb Raider day. I was hanging out with my new friends who are working on the eagerly awaited Tomb Raider game at the Nerd Machine central for their panel. Zach Levy, the actor from Chuck, and Nerd Machine head master came up to us and showed us towards the back room where the panel would be held, followed by a poster signing. This was also the first appearance of newly announced lead writer Rhianna Pratchett.

Later in the day was the Comic-Con Tomb Raider panel. A slight recap of the earlier panel, followed by Camilla and several Lara Croft cosplayers posing for pictures.

Sunday was the last day at the Con, but by then I had explored the floor and surrounding areas enough. It was time to call it quits and go back to Los Angeles. Definitely a very exhausting, yet extremely memorable Con.
